Conclusions

Well I visited the consultant today and there is a firm theory about what is the cause of my pain. Unfortunately it raises many questions. What they believe I have is acute neuropathy. Neuropathy is a condition of the nervous system that causes pain in the legs and numbness in the feet. Diabetic neuropathy is a common condition in diabetics, but only occurs after 10-15 years of poor control. Acute neuropathy is rare and very rare in type 1 diabetics. However, it appears that I might have a type of diabetes called LADA (latent autoimmune diabetes in adult). This is exemplified by later onset diabetes (after age 25) and also slow onset of the symptoms. This makes sense as I had symptoms of diabetes for at least a year, maybe as much as 2. It doesn't really make any difference that I have LADA, I still need insulin. The consultant hadn't seen a case of acute neuropathy in a type 1 before, so quite rare! It results from having high glucose levels for a long period followed by a quick reduction in levels.

The problem with acute neuropathy is that it can last a long time, maybe a year of more, but hopefully less than a couple of months. However the medicine, pregabalin (Lyrica) is a new drug which is effective in treating neuropathic pain. This is lucky as pre-2000, there were no effective treatments for the condition.

Still off work as I am too drowsy to concentrate properly, or even stay awake! Going to the GP tomorrow to see whether I need to be signed off, or should just get back to work. Have taken calls and been logged onto work all day, but hasn't been too busy.

Had a lovely day yesterday. Continued work building the compost heap. The weather was outstanding. Although I couldn't do any physical work, I cooked a full roast dinner for all of us, which we ate on the patio. It was a great success. The cherry tree in the garden is an absolute picture. It seems like the weather conditions must have been just right for them as they are in lovely blossom all over the place. The photograph below doesn't really do it justice.

The CCG Project!

In order to find out the situation around the country for Libre prescribing now that the national policy has been published, I have made the decision to contact many of them to find out their plans.  I have arbitrarily chosen to contact all English CCGs that in December 2018 prescribed Libre via Primary Care to less than 5% of their population (and one specific request from a group member).  I had hoped this would be a small list, but there are 135 CCGs on the list.  I may have bitten off more than I can chew, but I'm committed to doing this and feeding back.  It worked before and hopefully this level of scrutiny will bring similar results. Below is a screenshot of the base document I am sending to each of the CCGs - it has some fields that are merge fields, so don't worry about the brackets and codes in the document (I found a typo, which has now been corrected too) .  The major piece of work with respect to this is finding the right person to contact.  However, I have s

Abbott dX 2022 Barcelona - "Make it Count"

For the past four years I've been invited by Abbott to a conference bringing together people with diabetes from across Europe to discuss various topics.  The first year I was meant to attend, it was my 'man v horse' year (the horse won!), so was unable to attend and then the pandemic hit so two further dX's were held virtually.  I was fortunate to be asked to present at last year's session.  This year's event was back in-person and held in Barcelona, coinciding with the latter part of the ATTD conference.   At this point, I must make it very clear - Abbott invited me to the 2022 European Diabetes Exchange forum (dX), that took place in Barcelona.  I attended this two-day event to connect and interact with inspirational and influential people in the diabetes community.  Abbott paid for my ticket and accommodation. #InvitedbyAbbott.  This is formal and it needs to be - I have not been required to do anything by Abbott as a result of my attendance and I hope that m

July Update - CCGs Under Pressure!

The heat is unbearable in some parts, not only in the environment, but also hopefully the heat directed at the decision-makers in 'non-compliant' CCGs who are either refusing to accept that Libre is a revolutionary tool for many T1s or have agreed to fund, but then set crippling criteria. Latest Prescribing Data Progress in prescribing continues, with stabilisation in Scotland and a continuation of the steady rise in the other three countries of the UK.  The Wales May data should be out this week. As mentioned last month, the situation in Scotland is particularly promising and the excellent Edinburgh Centre for Endocrinology and the Scottish Health Technologies Group have published documents that should significantly help the Libre case.  These documents are based on the first six months of prescribing Libre.
